Vernier: refinement stages

August 20, 2006

Check it out ladies and gentlemen, Darwin’s getting pretty close to finalizing the Vernier mech design!

Three more conceptual drawings from roughs to cleanup, plus a little commentary from the Duke himself:

Refinement stage 1 :

“One of the critical issues that have to be addressed when it comes to this sort of design is whether or not the design itself is compelling. For a property like Rotogin, the mech designs play an integral part in raising its iconography. With that in mind, going beyond the conceptual stage may at times prove to be daunting.

Progressing further from the theoretical construct of the previous stage requires a great deal of experimentation. Basically, that is to conduct trial and error with different shapes (eg. Round, large,…etc) without breaking the rules of the original concept. This really turns into a confined thumbnail exercise of sorts and it gets fairly messy.”

Refinement stage 2 :

“Although, I’m still unsure of the final design, at this stage I want to clarify thing to a degree. Because I know how the mechanics should work in the preceding studies, I’m confident to attempt a partial clean up of the work and add a new element: in this case it’s the upper arm. I’m satisfied of the progress so far; however I’m still concerned with aesthetics.”

Refinement stage 3 :

“In an attempt to further illuminate my ideas, I do another clean up of the design. Right now the upperbody more resembles the front end of a sports car. I’m not completely convinced that this is a direction I want to go in, however n terms of design, it feel it has a nice flow. I’ll be developing the aesthetics based on this stage. As the process continues, certain components are bound to change, The next update in all likelihood will highlight these changes.”
