The Vernier: mech concepts
July 28, 2006So far, so good. Here’s some of the preliminary roughs Darwin drew up for Strachan and Milton’s mech. There’s a lot more to come on its finalizing stages, we should see a solid design come out pretty soon.
Here the following images will also have a little bit of Darwin’s commentary:

THUMBNAIL STAGE:

“The one concern I had designing this mech was that it needed to remain consistent with the design philosophy I created for the Rotogin lightweight division. These robots had to look compact, highly mobile, and be ready to inflict major damage. In terms of aesthetics, I decided to utilize a look similar to the ‘Carnage’ mech that appeared in issue 1. This thumbnail stage explores various visual and potential mechanical concepts that can be further developed. It really is quite messy.”

FURTHER MECHANICAL STUDY:

“After a series of thumbnails, I started breaking down individual parts and constructing the mech on a theoretical level. The biggest obstacle at this stage is to come up with a build that didn’t contradict itself. For example, the range movement of the arms shouldn’t constrict the movement of the legs or the body. I found this stage to be the most frustrating. I don’t have an engineering background so for the most part I’m making it up as I go along.”

CONJECTURAL FABRICATION:

“With all the elements set, I did a partial clean up of the design. At this stage I’m not all that concerned with how the mech looks cosmetically. Detailing will come in time, but what’s important is that all the ideas are working. I’m pretty confident right now that all my concerns in regards to the actual assembly are addressed. At this point I pretty much have a ‘bare bones’ working model and will continue to further refine it. The next update will showcase that process.”
