Operation Phoenix is a go!
July 11, 2006In order to understand what Operation Phoenix is about, one must understand what Rotogin is about. If you’re familiar with the title, you can skip the next paragraph and read the one near the bottom ;).
Otherwise…
For those who don’t know, “Rotogin” is a comic book series that takes place in a semi-distant future. Humans lived in domed cities and surrounded themselves with their love of technology. Robot battling events similar to the Olympics [called Rotogin tournaments] were commonplace until a ban was put on the sport; an accident between two competing mechs nearly decimated an entire city. While the dome city was more or less reconstructed some years later, its people took longer to recover; there were those who couldn’t agree with the ban and began doing things their way. Nowadays the sport went underground and became a nestling place for gangsters, gamblers, gearheads and mech pilots looking for ways to get by or live the high life. The story in Rotogin revolves around a girl named Kaylin Dakota who through a series of events finds herself participating in those underground tournaments –
And I’ll stop there with the overview hehe :D.
As for “Operation Phoenix”, it’s a working title to an official Rotogin sidestory comic cooked up by the mech designer, Darwin Duka. Basically he wanted to write about one of the more prominent characters in the comic: Siris Monroe, a femme-fatale with white dreads who pilots a mech called the Spider-Mantiez. For backup he called in one of the Rotogin colourists to do some concept work and screentones, aXL99 [me].
This sidestory is not necessarily related to the main arc but adds a bit of insight into its environment. Reason why we’re doing this on our own time is because it’s for fun, Rotogin is in many ways something special to the creative team. Creds to J.Lee for coming up with the story and the world it revolves around.
And just a lil trivia to start things off… Darwin came up with the name Operation Phoenix based off the name of a noodle stall in Market Village’s foodcourt (Markham).
